Passenger arrivals and border crossings, Naturalization records, Census records for all states (including Agricultural, Mortality, Industry/Manufacturers and Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes), Passport Records, Records of the Regular Army, Service Records of Volunteers, Naval and Marine Service Records, Pension Records, Bounty Land Warrant Records, Records of Native Americans, African Americans, Merchant Seamen, Civilian Government Employees, Land Records, Claims Records, Tax Records including 1798 Direct Tax list for PA and Tax Assessment Lists for the Civil War period.

Special to this facility is the cartographic division: enumeration district maps, township survey plats, U.S. Land district maps, military maps, and maps pertaining to American Indians.

You can use the card catalog at http://dar.library.net/ and plan your research. Don’t miss the GRC records indexed at http://grc.dar.org/dar/darnet/grc/grc.cfm containing manuscripts arranged by state that include unique material submitted by each DAR chapter since the 1910s and containing over 7,000,000 names in such records as cemetery inscriptions, military records and bible records.
Holdings include unique abstracts done by each DAR chapter each year for their area such as cemetery readings and Bible records; DAR lineage papers. Open stacks are organized by geography or alphabetical by predominant surname for family histories.

Open 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday; from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Local History and Genealogy (LH&G) Reading Room is on the ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, Room LJ G42.
A Reader Registration Card is required to use the Library’s reading rooms. This card may be obtained in the James Madison Building, Room LM 140. You must present ID that includes a photograph and current address, such as a driver’s license, or passport.
Mostly closed stacks: use call slips to access. Some reference materials on open stacks.
Photocopy machines in room operated by coins or copy card.

Family Name Index (white labels) family names found on the title page (no more than 3)
Analyzed Surname Index (green labels): selective county histories and biographies; last drawer identifies the county histories that are covered.
Coats of Arms Index (white labels) guide to illustrations of coats of arms
US Biographical Index (pink labels) indexes individuals; first drawer lists Books Indexed
